At Kitman Motors, we’re committed to providing detailed guidance on every part of the build process

At Kitman Motors, our goal is to provide clear and detailed guidance on every aspect of building your Kitman Coupe. We’re working through the full build process step by step, and these technical guides will continue to grow over time as we document each stage.

While we work to release new guides, we encourage you to reach out if you have any specific questions about your build. We’re happy to help.

We’ll also be sending out occasional emails whenever new technical guides are released, so you can stay up to date as more content becomes available.

Kitman Coupe Door Hinge Installation

Kitman Coupe Door Hinge Installation Guide

Installing doors correctly is one of the most important steps when building a Kitman Coupe. Proper hinge placement ensures good door gaps, smooth operation, and long-term durability.

This guide provides a clear, step-by-step process for mounting the door hinges on the Kitman Coupe kit. It is written for builders using the official Kitman tube chassis or Kitman subframe, but can also be used as a reference for custom-built frames.

The system uses 3D printed templates and a combination of fixed mounting on the body and slotted mounting on the door, giving you good adjustability for a proper fit.

Recommended Hardware: Use .75" diameter aluminum spacers in lengths ranging from .5" to 1" to fine-tune the door’s in/out position.

Tools & Materials Needed

  • 3D printed body-side template
  • 3D printed door-side template
  • 1/4" drill bit + drill
  • Hole saw (if needed)
  • Rivnuts + installation tool
  • .75" diameter aluminum spacers (.5" – 1" lengths)
  • Backing plates or large washers
  • Clamps and marker

Phase 1: Body Side Hinge Installation

Step 1: Mount the Body to the Frame

Support both the front and rear sections of the body so it sits evenly on the door sill frames. Bolt the body into a fixed position.

Step 2: Verify A-Pillar Fit

Check that the A-pillar chassis post is clamped tightly against the body with no gap on the inside surface.

Step 3: Mark Hole Locations

Use the body-side and door-side 3D printed templates to mark all hinge mounting hole locations.

Step 4: Drill Holes, Remove Body & Install Rivnuts

Drill pilot holes using a 1/4" drill bit. Remove the body from the frame. Install rivnuts into the frame, especially on the A-pillar. Drill clearance holes in the body. If needed, use a hole saw to remove fiberglass on the outer side of the pillar for proper bolt clearance.

Step 5: Install Spacers & Mount Hinges to Body

Use .75" aluminum spacers to adjust the hinge position. Reinstall the body onto the frame and mount the hinges to the body side (fixed position). Adjust the door’s in/out position using spacers behind the hinge.

Phase 2: Door Side Hinge Installation

Step 6: Create Adjustment Slots on Door

Use the door-side template to mark hole centers. Open the holes into slots to allow approximately 0.5" of forward/backward movement.

Step 7: Mock Up Door & Adjust Fit

Hang the door on the hinges and check the fit. Adjust the slotted holes to set proper door gaps. Use body-side spacers for in/out adjustment.

Final Notes

  • Use backing plates or large washers on the door side to spread the load.
  • Once final fit is confirmed, backing plates can be bonded in place.
  • Doors are typically slightly oversized and will require trimming.
  • In some cases, material may need to be added to correct gaps.
